Alissa met Brent in their freshman chemistry class at the University of Texas at Austin. Brent was a big-man-on-campus while Alissa was one of only two black Longhorn cheerleaders. She dated the president of the Kappa Alpha Psi black fraternity until he took a job in New York. She stayed with Brent, whom she'd fallen for during one of their late-night tutoring sessions.

He recently inherited it from his father, who passed from a massive heart attack at a young age, and shares it with his cantankerous old grandmother whose main goal in life is to get him married off.

It was the Winthrop money that started Worthington Oil Holdings, a fact that Harriet never lets Brent forget. She's a pure Texas snob, was a debutante in her day and would absolutely DIE if she knew about Brent's long-time feelings for Alissa.
She's referred to as Grandma "Haggie" by all the grandchildren, though she despises it, because Grandma Harriet was too challenging for little ones to say. Brent, being the oldest and most precocious, naturally coined the phrase. He delights in calling her "Hags" to this day.
This was the "theme song" for Jess's trip to meet Brent since he was as much as tour guide showing off his home state as a new boyfriend
